What is a Urostomy?
A Urostomy is the creation of a new exit route for the passage of urine from the body. For further details click here.
How can I avoid getting urinary infections?
People with a Urostomy are advised to drink 2-3 litres of fluid daily (preferably water) to produce a good urine flow and flush out any bacteria. For further details click here.
Will I need a special diet?
The simple answer is no, but there are a few issues to do with food and fluid intake. Some medication may discolour the urine. Click here for details.
What problems will I have to cope with?
Many Urostomates have few or no problems whatsoever. However some do experience difficulties. Click here for further details.
When can I go back to work?
It depends on the nature of your work, an average of 3 months is usually required for convalescence after major abdominal surgery. Urostomates are classified as being incontinent under the Disability Discrimination Act so employers are required to make reasonable arrangements to enable an employee to return to work.
Will having a Urostomy affect my sex life?
There may be issues to do with fertility, sexual relations and intercourse if your bladder has been removed.

When can I start driving after my operation?
Driving should be avoided for a period of time, to give time for tissues inside the abdomen to heal properly. Your Consultant will advise you when you can start driving again.
Will I be eligible for a blue disabled parking badge?
A Urostomy alone is not be considered as being sufficiently disabling to justify the issue of a blue parking badge.
